Ford 10R80 10-speed Transmission Class Action
Charney Lawyers PC has commenced a national class action in British Columbia against Ford Motor Company and Ford Motor Company of Canada Limited (“Ford”) on behalf of all Canadian residents who owned or leased a Ford Expedition, Ford Mustang, Ford Ranger, Ford F-150, or Lincoln Navigator from model years 2017/2018 to the present manufactured by Ford and equipped with a 10R80 10-speed Transmission. The lawsuit is only on behalf of Canadian residents.
The Issue: Alleged Defects in the 10R80 Transmission
The lawsuit alleges that the 10R80 10-speed Transmission, developed through a joint venture between Ford and General Motors, has been linked to significant operational issues. Owners of class vehicles have reported problems such as:
- Unintended lunging when shifting from park to drive
- Shimmying and shuddering while in motion
- Difficulty shifting gears
- Premature wear of clutch plates and transmission components
- Sudden gearshift that has not been initiated by the driver
Since the introduction of the 10R80 Transmission in 2017, Ford and its Canadian counterpart have been inundated with consumer complaints. Numerous reports on internet forums and direct complaints to Ford highlight ongoing issues with shifting, jerking, and unintended downshifting at high speeds.
In response to these concerns, government agencies have taken action:
- March 2025: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the United States launched an investigation into unexpected downshifting incidents in Ford F-150 vehicles from 2015-2017. This investigation could impact up to 1.3 million vehicles.
- Similar Investigation in Canada: Transport Canada has also begun looking into complaints regarding unintended downshifting in 2017-2020 F-150 vehicles equipped with the 10R80 Transmission, after receiving 11 consumer complaints.
