Sumaiya Akhter is an associate at Charney Lawyers where she practices in the areas of multi jurisdictional class actions, privacy law and general litigation.
Sumaiya completed her undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Law at Karl Franzen's University of Graz, Graz, Austria. While at Graz she completed an internship at the Criminal Court as a case assistant. She moved to Canada in 2019 to attend law school at the University of New Brunswick where she was a graduate research assistant for the Faculty of Law, Faculty of Sociology, Office of Experiential Learning and Institute for Data and Privacy. Sumaiya graduated law school with a Juris Doctor in 2021.
Sumaiya articled at the Department of Justice in Fredericton, New Brunswick where she represented various federal government departments and developed litigation experience in labour and employment law, contract law and constitutional law. She started at Charney Lawyers in September 2022.
Sumaiya is actively involved in the legal community. She is a member of the South Asian Bar Association and volunteers at Capital Rainbow Refuge, a non-profit organization that provides private sponsorship for LGBTQI+ refugees to Canada. In her free time she likes to dance, travel, write and paint. She speaks German, Bangla/Bengali, English, French and Hindi
